Known from Known only from the type locality in a patch of wet and montane fores at 2,743 m asl in the Reserva Ecológica Huitepec in Chiapas, Mexico. Listed as Critically Endangered (B1ab(iii)) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
The species is thought to be threatened primarily by habitat loss which is estimated to be 26% in the last 10 years. Agriculture and deforestation are major threats to the species' habitat.

Little is known of the ecology of this species. The specific name is derived from the Greek stizo ‘to prick or puncture’. The fur of the dorsum, venter and hairs on the tail are uniformly reddish-brown.
