Although born in the Year of Rat of Chinese Zodiac, my true connection with small mammals started until I studied these adaptable creatures indirectly as a prey of civets at the Department of Ecology & Biodiversity, the University of Hong Kong. After affiliated to Kadoorie Conservation China of Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden, I have managed a camera trap monitoring project of mammals and the in-situ conservation of Hainan gibbon (Nomascus hainanus).
Coming high priority is set to study the distribution, habitat use and ecology of the endangered Hainan gynmure (Neohylomys hainanensis). Preliminary surveys and interviews have been conducted for forest rodent and insectivore in Hainan and I hope to extend research efforts to other species in future, including the elusive lesser marmoset rat (Hapalomys delacouri). The goal is to provide conservation recommendations for this largely overlooked group in South China.
